Jeff Bezos offers $2bn to Nasa for moon mission contract

pub-1983860445386454 After his successful tour to the edge of space, Jeff Bezos on Monday announced a $2bn offer to Nasa, to cover its costs, if the US space Agency agrees to award his Blue rigin company a contract to make a spacecraft for astronauts back to moon.In April 2021, Nasa awarded SpaceX, owned by a rival billionaire Elon Musk, a $2.9bn contract to build a spacecraft, but rejected Blue Origin and defense contractor Dynestics bids. The space agency in their response to Blue Origin and defense contractor Dynestics argued that its agency had funding shortfalls, SpaceX' proven record of orbital missions and other factors in a contract decision, as some of the reasons they declined the duo's requests. In a formal letter to Bill Nelson, Bezos said his company will waive payments in the government's fiscal year and pay up to $2bn, and also pay for an orbital mission to vet its technology.''Nasa veered from its original dual-source acquisition strategy due to perceived near-term budgetary issues, and this offer removes that obstacle''. Bezos wrote in a letter to Nasa.Nasa spokesperson however responded by indicating that the agency was much aware of Bezo's letter but refused to comment to it, accusing Blue Origin of filling a case with the US government Accountability Office, alleging that Nasa gave SpaceX unfair advantage by allowing it to revise its pricing. The US govenment Accountability Office's verdict is due next month, few days after Bezo's $2bn offer to Nasa.Bezo's offer came few days after his tour to the edge of space, using his own Blue Origin's rocket and a capsule New Shepard, accompanied by three crew mates.
