Bezos, The Man Behind Amazon Success

American entrepreneur Jeff Bezos is the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Amazon. His thriving business ventures have made him one of the wealthiest man on EarthJeff Bezos, is the founder andformer CEO of Amazon, the e-commerce company, owner of Washing Post and the founder of the current space exploration company, Blue Origin. Born in 1964 in New Mexico, Bezos studied Computer Science due his love for computers and and Engineering at the University of Princeton.After his graduation, he worked at Wall Street and later in 1990, became  Senior Vice President of the investment firm, D E.Shaw.Bezos however quit his well paying job and opened Amazon.com, an online bookstore, which became one of the internet's biggest success stories.The initial success of Amazon was characterized by continuous challenges with no or little press promotion as the company only sold books across the United States and in 45 foreign countries within 30 days. Things however changed and after two months, Amazon sales reached $20,000, a week, growing faster as earlier envisaged.Amazon went to limelight in 1997 when other leading marketing analysts were questioning whether it will hold it's own but two years later, the company profits grew up, outpacing other competitors and becoming an e-commerce leader.As these were unfolding,Bezos continued to diversify the company activities with the sale of CDs and videos and later clothes, electronics, toys among other stuff through major retail partnerships, and in 2001, Amazon yearly sales increased from$510,000 in 1995 to over $17bn in 2011.Bezos who has since stepped down as Amazon CEO, has contributed immensely to the company he founded 27 years back and is seen as the promoter upon which the company foundation was laid.The American billionaire who is now concentrating on space and his Blue Origin company is said to have put concerted effort on climate change and has also put unusual leadership which some argue are the determinants of his success.Written by Clement Ouma
